About the Production
The play follows the inhabitants of Curaco de Vélez, in the Chiloé Archipelago, during the early 1970s. Faced with limited employment opportunities, many of the town’s men migrate to Patagonia, leaving behind their land and families. The story portrays a community of women carrying the responsibilities of daily life and unemployed men unable to build a future in their own territory.
Created by La Dramática Nacional, this large-scale production brought together 22 performers, live music and audiovisual work. The staging drew on Chiloé’s architecture, music, traditional dances, mythology and syncretic worldview to bring the culture of Quinchao Island to the stage.
Alongside its celebration of Chilean cultural heritage, the production opened a conversation around issues that remain present today, including centralisation, gender stereotypes and the historical precarity experienced by working-class communities.
